Vishnumoorthy Theyyam
Vishnumoorthy Theyyam is a divine spectacle, representing the Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu. The face painting is intricate, predominantly featuring green, symbolising divinity, and red, signifying power. The crown is an architectural marvel, designed to represent a temple gopuram with a flurry of divine motifs. The performer wears a kireetam (crown), which is made from areca nut tree flower spikes, dyed and fixed on a bamboo framework.
The narrative usually recounts the story of Palanthai Kannan, a hero revered for his virtues. The dance moves are rhythmic yet fierce, capturing the essence of Narasimha’s valour and Palanthai Kannan’s righteous courage. The performance is often accompanied by songs sung in praise of Lord Vishnu, punctuated by the compelling rhythms of drums and the clang of cymbals.
Vishnumoorthy Theyyam’s costume is elaborate, incorporating richly hued fabrics and traditional ornaments. Large circular pieces of decor often adorn the back of the performer, completing the divine ensemble. These not only serve to enhance the visual drama but also elevate the mythical storytelling. The entire performance, rich in narrative and ritual, brings the community together in a celebration of shared cultural heritage and devotion.
