Bali Theyyam

The tale of Bali from the Ramayana serves as the foundational narrative for the Bali Thyyeam. The story revolves around the conflict and eventual confrontation between Bali and his brother Sugriva.

In the epic Ramayana, after a fierce battle with the demons, Bali was believed to be dead. Taking advantage of this presumption, Sugriva sealed the entrance of the cave, where Bali was resting, with a boulder and assumed kingship over the kingdom of Kishkindha. However, Bali emerged alive and found that his kingdom had been usurped by his own brother. The subsequent confrontation between the two brothers and Bali’s powerful character forms the central theme of the Bali Theyyam.

The Theyyam performance vividly captures the raw emotions, valour, and the intense energy of Bali. Through elaborate costumes, intricate facial paintings, and intense dance movements, the performer brings to life Bali’s formidable presence, his anger towards Sugriva, and his majestic prowess. The essence of the Vanaras (monkey-men), their nature, and emotions can be seen in every gesture and movement of the Theyyam. The rhythmic beats of traditional instruments, when synchronised with the dance, amplify the aura and the dramatic intensity of the performance, making the Bali Theyyam a complete and immersive experience.
