Narambil Bhagavathi Theyyam

A popular legend behind this theyyam goes like this: A Woman from Narambil Tharavad was married to a man called Rayaramangalath Adiyodi. Their family deity was Kali, the destroyer of demons. When the woman, who was pregnant, was caught trying to go to her ancestral home, her husband condemned her actions, bound her, and caused her immediate death. Learning of this horrific event, the woman’s mother prayed tearfully to the goddess in the shrine of Narampil Tharavadu. Enraged, the goddess went to Rayaramangalam like a wild gust of wind.

To pacify the wrathful goddess, Mucchilottu Bhagavathi was invoked. Mucchilottu Bhagavathi, manifesting as Maanjaalamma, offered soothing words and a revered status to the goddess, thereby calming her. Thus, according to the legend, the deity became known as Narampil Bhagavathi and attained her form as a Kolam (a form of representation in the Theyyam ritual).
